Stop & Shop, Giant Food to Offer Pet Insurance

Ahold-owned Stop & Shop and Giant Food will begin offering pet insurance this fall as a complement to their pet products, and an additional service to pet-owning shoppers.

"We believe that the addition of this pet service will augment several of our merchandising models in our stores,” said Bryan Shlager, category manager, pet for Stop & Shop. “[It will also] provide the opportunity to create an expanded range of services specifically designed for our pet-owning customers."

The grocery chains signed a three-year partnership with Pethealth Inc., which will provide the insurance under the pet private label Companion brand.

Stop & Shop and Giant Food will promote the program with advertisements in brochures and on pet food bags, as well as on their Web sites.

Pethealth's wholly owned subsidiary, PTZ Insurance Agency, Ltd, is acting as administrator for the program, which is underwritten by Praetorian Insurance Company.

Stop & Shop operates more than 375 stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Giant Food operates more than 180 locations in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
