Wegmans Lowers Price of Select Prescription Drugs
Staring March 1, Wegmans Food Markets will lower the price of almost 390 commonly prescribed generic prescription drugs, a list of which will be available March 1 on the grocer's Web site. The discount program will mean a one-month supply of the drugs will cost $4 and a three-month supply will cost $10.
Among the drugs to be covered by the program are Gentamicin, which is used for skin infections; Ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory; Warfarin, a heart medication; and Lovastatin, which treats diabetes.
"It has confirmed what we've always known," said president Colleen Wegman. "If we approach everything by doing what's right for our employees and customers, it is also good for our business."
The move is part of Wegmans' overall focus on its pharmacy counter. For example, earlier in the year the Rochester, N.Y.-based company introduced a free prescription antibiotics program.
Wegmans expects that the uninsured will benefit greatest from the program. It estimates that employees, customers and state and federal governments will save $15 million.
