Winn-Dixie Adds Bonus Rewards to fuelperks!, Bows 2nd Revamped SaveRite

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. has enhanced its fuelperks! program by now offering “Bonus Rewards.” The fuelperks! initiative, which gives Winn-Dixie shoppers who use their Customer Reward Card (CRC) a five-cent-per-gallon fuel discount for every $50 in qualified purchases, has saved customers over $4 million since its launch at the grocer’s Panama City, Fla., location in September 2008. Fuelperks! expanded to the Jacksonville, Fla., area last September.

Now shoppers can earn further fuelperks! rewards discounts of up to 20 cents per gallon when they buy select bonus items at Winn-Dixie stores in Jacksonville and Panama City. The fuelperks! rewards accrue based on purchases and can be redeemed at participating fuel stations.

The bonus items vary weekly, and are limited to one offer per customer per transaction. Customers can see the bonus items of the week, register for the fuelperks! program, monitor their account balance, and find participating stores and gas stations at www.winn-dixie.com/fuelperks.

“Winn-Dixie’s fuleperks! program is a convenient way for shoppers to save money on two necessities — groceries and gas,” said Mary Kellmanson, group VP of marketing for Jacksonville-based Winn-Dixie. “The addition of Bonus Rewards to our fuelperks! program provides shoppers even more value every time they shop at Winn-Dixie, because they save money on food for their families and gas for their cars.”

Other retailers that offer the program from Irving, Texas-based Excentus Corp. include Giant Eagle, Bi-Lo and Roundy’s.

In other Winn-Dixie news, the company also this week opened its second revamped SaveRite store, on Jacksonville’s Westside. The overhauled location, located at 5134 Firestone Road at 103rd Street, takes as its template the SaveRite at 1012 Edgewood Avenue near Commonwealth Avenue, which opened in January 2009. Both stores offer everyday low pricing on thousands of items, in addition to monthly locked-in specials and special price-drop items in a warehouse format.

“In moving forward with this design concept, we spent a great deal of time reviewing our customers’ shopping preferences and how the SaveRite concept was fulfilling customer needs,” explained Winn-Dixie chief merchandising and marketing officer Dan Portnoy. “We were able to aggressively cut costs and lower prices on thousands of items throughout the store by focusing only on those items and services that are most important to our customers.”

As well as a full-service seafood department and improved produce and meat departments, the 47,000-square-foot store has an in-store pharmacy offering 30-day supplies of over 400 generic drugs for $3.98. Among the location’s other features are newly designed warehouse-style shopping carts and mainstay items that can be purchased by the case.

SaveRite specials to mark the store’s grand opening before Easter include fully cooked smoked hams for 78 cents per pound, whole bone-in ribeye for $3.88 per pound, Roma tomatoes for 78-cents per pound, 10-pound bag of premium russet potatoes for $1.88, two 1-pound packages of fresh Florida strawberries for $3 and 48-ounce cartons of Breyers ice cream for $1.98. Shoppers will also get a $25 SaveRite or Winn-Dixie gift card when they transfer a prescription to the in-store pharmacy.

Winn-Dixie operates 515 retail grocery locations, including more than 400 in-store pharmacies, in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi. Also included among the company’s operations are 10 SaveRite locations in Florida and Mississippi.
