Hy-Vee Inc. is now offering a Begin for Diabetes lifestyle management program, along with its existing Begin and Begin 4 Kids programs. Registered dietitians lead the three initiatives in all 244 of the Midwestern grocer’s stores across eight states.
The 10-week Begin for Diabetes program helps participants address certain issues and manage their condition. Customers can opt for individual consultations or take part in a group for further support.
At the sessions, attendees will learn how to make smart choices when eating out, how to count carbs and plan healthy meals, techniques to deal with the stress following diagnosis, how to avoid complications and recognize signs of hypo- and hyperglycemia, and how to control portion sizes and maintain food logs based on their dietary needs.
“About 29 million Americans have diabetes, and managing the disease can come with a significant learning curve,” explained Kristin Williams, SVP and chief health officer at West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee, an employee-owned company. “Our registered dietitians are here to help educate and support program participants on their journey to making their lives healthier and happier.”
Hy-Vee’s 10-week Begin program instructs participants in weight management through the keeping of detailed journals and eating more healthfully, as well as offering biometric screenings, while the four-week Begin 4 Kids program emphasizes food groups, activity and eating for good health, along with the Hy-Vee KidsFit program and website that encourage children to be active and exercise.
Additionally, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in three adult Americans, or 86 million people, have pre-diabetes and nine out of 10 of them are unaware of it, Hy-Vee has introduced a pilot initiative in 50 stores to help pre-diabetic individuals lead healthier lives. The aim is to roll this product out to all Hy-Vee stores in the near future.
