Food Lion Now Delivering Beer, Wine via Instacart

Food Lion has added beer and wine delivery to all areas where it offers home delivery service, as part of its partnership with San Francisco-based third-party grocery delivery service Instacart.

Customers ordering alcohol on Instacart will have to provide their date of birth during the online checkout process to confirm they are 21 or older. Further, a recipient age 21 or older must sign for the order and show proof of legal age with valid photo identification.

"As we work to expand our home delivery service, Food Lion is proud to provide this additional offering of beer and wine as part of our ongoing commitment to making grocery shopping easy and convenient," noted Neil Norman, director of customer loyalty at the Salisbury, N.C.-based grocer.

Food Lion is currently testing the Instacart service in 57 ZIP codes across the greater Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C. regions. Additionally, Food Lion has expanded home delivery to 40 ZIP codes across the Charlotte area.

The supermarket chain first piloted Instacart in in May 2016 in Charlotte, followed by the launch of the service in Raleigh a month later. According to the grocer, it will continue to test and expand the service in select ZIP codes in these areas.

Food Lion customers using Instacart for the first time will receive their first home delivery free. They can also link their personal MVP cards and Instacart accounts to take advantage of the supermarket chain’s weekly savings specials and discounts.

A company of Delhaize America, a U.S. division of Amsterdam-based Royal Ahold Delhaize Group, Food Lion has nearly 1,000 stores in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, and employs more than 63,000 associates.
