Walmart CIO Karenann Terrell to Depart

Karenann Terrell, CIO of Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. since 2012, will leave her position on Feb. 24, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, citing an internal memo. Terrell has been with the company since 2010, joining as EVP of information systems. In the memo, President and CEO Doug McMillon offered no reason for the move, or any information on where she was headed.

A spokesman told the Journal that new technology leadership would be named soon.

Last year, Walmart combined corporate IT and e-commerce in a single unit under its then-head of e-commerce, Neil Ashe, who left the company in November as the retailer completed a $3.3 billion acquisition of e-commerce startup Jet.com Inc. Marc Lore, Jet.com’s founder, succeeded Ashe. Jeremy King, chief technology officer for global e-commerce, is still with Walmart.

“Her charter was clear – modernize our retail technology team and power our store and club businesses by enabling a seamless shopping experience at scale,” McMillon said of Terrell. “Under her leadership, we have made great strides,” including self-checkout technology, in-store wireless access, and collaboration with the e-commerce team on Walmart Pay
