PEMBROKE, N.H. -- AG Supermarkets, Inc., a subsidiary of Associated Grocers of New England, Inc. here, has reached an agreement to buy DeVylder's Community Market in Wolfeboro, N.H.
"AG New England is the ideal company to take over what we began back in 1995," said Dennis DeVylder, co-owner of the 13-year-old, 12,000-square-foot market with Patrick Marks, in a statement. "As the store's supplier since the day it opened, they've been very involved with us through the years."
In addition to the market, Marks and his family run Paul W. Marks Co., Inc., a foodservice supplier near the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, Mass., and the DeVylder family owns a 600-tree apple orchard in Wolfeboro that supplies produce to the store, as well as to restaurants and hotels.
"Dennis and Patrick understood the importance of quality, freshness, and giving people what they want," noted AG New England president and c.e.o. Mike Bourgoine. "They recognized that both locals and summer tourists alike would appreciate a supermarket that understood freshness, personalized service, and a true sense of community. They took a property that was in poor condition and did a costly reconstruction of the store. They went on to create a look and style very much their own."
According to Bourgoine, the market "fits in very well with the profile of our other company-owned stores."
AG Supermarkets management will interview current store employees to fill positions at Harvest Market.
The closing of the sale of the store, which is scheduled for early March, is subject to final agreement between the parties on the details of the transaction.
The largest retailer-owned distribution center in New England, AG New England is owned entirely by independent retail grocers and supplies almost 500 independent food stores in Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and the upstate New York/Albany area. AG Supermarkets, a subsidiary company, owns and operates four New Hampshire supermarkets: Harvest Market of Bedford, Harvest Market of Hollis, Vista Foods in Laconia, and Riverview Market in Woodsville.
