Dierbergs Builds New Flagship Store

St. Louis-area grocer Dierbergs is building a new flagship store that will include many innovative features, including what the company says is the first underground parking garage at a grocery store in its metro area.

Dierbergs has commissioned HBD Construction to build the free-standing 80,000-square-foot store on a 6.5-acre site off Manchester Road in the St. Louis suburb of Des Peres. The grocer said 42 percent of the store’s parking spaces will be in a brightly-lit lower level garage.

“This Des Peres location is going to be the finest, most revolutionary store among their 24 locations.” HBD President Mike Perry said of the supermarket, scheduled to open in July. “To call it their flagship is probably an understatement.”

The store will provide customer and cart escalators, and elevators leading directly from the garage into the supermarket. “This location will offer a smooth and dry one-of-a-kind shopping experience in inclement weather,” said Gerry Hill, HPD project manager.

The Des Peres Dierbergs will be the chain’s first multilevel store. It will feature a 5,000-square-foot mezzanine, offering customers an area in which to enjoy freshly prepared foods. The store will also boast the largest Dierbergs produce department to date, a remote drive-through pharmacy in the covered parking area, a new floral and gift department, an extensive natural and organic section, a larger seafood department and a multitude of in-store food-education opportunities.
