Dollar General Taps Former Safeway Exec as c.e.o.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. -- National discount retailer Dollar General here said yesterday it has tapped Richard W. Dreiling, former c.e.o. of New York-based Duane Reade, to serve as c.e.o. of the 8,000-plus chain, effective Jan. 21.

Dreiling, a 38-year veteran retailer, has also served in senior leadership roles with Safeway, Inc. and Longs Drug Stores.

"Dollar General has made excellent progress in recent months, and I believe there are exciting opportunities to extend the company's record of innovation in the small-box discounting segment," said Dreiling in a statement. "I will work aggressively to enhance the brand and strengthen the company's position as a leader in serving cost-conscious shoppers who value convenience."

Dreiling, 54, served 33 years at Safeway in a number of leadership roles, including e.v.p. of marketing, manufacturing, and distribution; and president of the Vons division. Immediately prior to joining Duane Reade, Dreiling was the e.v.p. and c.o.o. of Longs Drug Stores Corp.

David Bere, Dollar General's president and c.o.o. who served as interim c.e.o., will continue to serve the company as president and c.o.o.
