D&W Coordinates Chicken Giveaway
Western Michigan food pantries received an early Christmas present, thanks to D&W Fresh Market and one of its key suppliers.
Indiana-based Miller Poultry distributed 4,000 pounds of frozen chicken to area food pantries last week at D&W’s Apple Orchard Avenue store in Grand Rapids, Mich. Access Food Bank of West Michigan received product for distribution to needy families, coordinating efforts through five food banks.
“This generous donation from Miller Poultry will serve 8,000 West Michigan residents this holiday season,” said Jeanne Norcross, Spartan Stores’ VP of corporate affairs. “In this tough economy with rising unemployment, there is an increasing demand on the food pantries. We are proud and honored to partner with Miller Poultry to assist with this distribution through our D&W Fresh Market Knapp’s Crossing location. Miller Poultry has been supplying our stores with fresh, all-natural, hormone-free chicken for the past few years.”
The Kent County-based non-profit Access Food Pantry Network serves 6,500 households (about 20,000 people) each month.
“Miller Poultry’s goal has always been to provide the freshest and healthiest chicken available to its customers, and making our chicken available to those struggling through tough times this holiday is a true gift to our company,” said Miller Poultry’s Len Neeb. “Our locally home-grown chickens are fed a corn and soy-based diet with no artificial ingredients or coloring, produced at our own feed mill in New Paris, Indiana. Our farms are in a smaller regional area, located within miles of our processing plant, so our carbon footprint is minimized. We have chosen to partner with Spartan Stores and D&W Fresh Market because of our mutual commitment to improving the communities in which we live and work.”
