Editor’s Note

Deciphering nutritional labels today requires the kind of brainpower I used to reserve for the daily Sudoku. And I have become pretty compulsive about reading nutritional labels in the supermarket. It’s not enough to read “wheat” on a loaf of bread and toss it in your cart. You’ve got to do some digging. Is it actually “whole wheat”? If it’s “multi-grain,” is it made from whole grains? What’s the carb count? Which frozen treat is better for you — the one with “no sugar added” or the one that says “low fat”? It takes a lot of time to add all this up.

Two of the stories we’re bringing you in this issue deal with this very subject: Clarifying nutritional labeling is one. The second has to do with discovering the tastiest, most convenient healthier-for-you-foods in today’s supermarket aisles — a ready-made healthy shopping list, if you will.
