Ex-Sweetbay CEO Broader Moves to Michaels Stores

Shelley Broader, the former president and c.e.o. of Sweetbay Supermarkets, Inc., has resurfaced outside the retail grocery world: She will now serve as president and c.o.o. of Irving, Texas-based craft store chain Michaels Stores, Inc., reporting to another former grocery executive, Brian C. Cornell. (Cornell, who is c.e.o. of Michaels, formerly served as e.v.p. and chief marketing officer at Safeway, Inc.)

Broader, whose tenure at Michaels officially begins June 23, will lead several key operations of the company, including Michaels and Aaron Brothers store operations, Michaels’ Artistree division, supply chain operations, real estate development, loss prevention, and store planning.

Broader, 44, brings strong retail leadership experience to Michaels. She most recently served as president and c.e.o. of Sweetbay Supermarkets, Inc., formerly doing business as Kash n’Karry Food Stores, Inc., the Tampa, Fla.-based part of the U.S. division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group. From June 2003 to March 2006, she served as president and c.o.o. of Sweetbay.

Prior to joining Sweetbay, Broader served in various management positions at another Delhaize-owned chain, Hannaford Bros. Co., most recently as s.v.p., business strategy, marketing, and communications.

Broader currently serves on the board of directors, and is a member of the audit committee, of Raymond James Financial, Inc.

“Shelley will further strengthen our leadership team at Michaels,” said Cornell. “Her proven track record in retail leadership, transforming store concepts, and enhancing customer service will bring fresh insights to Michaels and position us for future success.”
