ABINGDON, Va. -- Steven C. Smith, president and c.e.o. of the Food City chain here, has begun his term as chair of the FMI board of directors, taking over where Jeff Noddle, c.e.o. of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, left off, and putting food safety at the top of his agenda.
"During the next two years, I hope to focus on a number of issues vital to the food industry," Smith said in a statement. "Food safety is currently my top priority, in lieu of the major recalls our industry has recently encountered."
Throughout his career with Food City, Smith has served in numerous key positions, including district manager, director of meat operations, director of advertising, store operations divisional v.p., e.v.p.of store operations and c.o.o., before assuming his current role.
He has also served on the boards of Topco, Wellmont Health Care Systems, Bristol Chamber of Commerce, and Weis Supermarkets, and is a member of Sequoyah Council Boy Scouts of America and the National Grocers Association, serving as chairman from 2000 to 2002.
Smith and Food City support many civic organizations, including the Boy Scouts, United Way, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, American Cancer Society, East Tennessee Children's Hospital, Santa Pals, YWCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, and the American Diabetes Association. Smith is the 2006-2007 campaign chairman for the United Way of Washington County.
K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc., Food City's parent company, currently operates 95 retail food outlets in the tri-state regions of southeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, and northeast Tennessee.
