Former Giant Eagle Exec Joins the USO

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Jack Flanagan, once the e.v.p. of retail operations at Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle, has become the s.v.p. for operations for the United Service Organizations (USO), in which role he will develop and direct all USO operation functions for the active-duty military worldwide, as well as create and implement new and existing programs and services for the USO.

While at Giant Eagle Flanagan established the Giant Eagle Business Systems Group in 2003, and was responsible for streamlining operations and maximizing efficiencies within the retailer and its suppliers. He reduced corporate expenditures, worked to improve the company's image, grew sales, and created and headed up a supply chain project that delivered $40 million in savings in its first year. Flanagan then founded and served as president of Poseidon Consultancy, LLC in 2005.

As a Navy supply officer, Flanagan served in Europe, Asia and the United States before his retirement in 1990.

"Jack is a welcomed addition to the USO," said USO president and c.e.o. Edward A. Powell in a statement. "His leadership skills, strategic vision and military background will be of great value to the USO as we expand to meet the increasing needs of military personnel and their families."

The nonprofit USO provides morale, welfare and recreational services to U.S. military personnel and their families.
