Giant Eagle Pilots Automated Pharmacy System

Regional independent Giant Eagle, Inc., is piloting an automated pharmacy workflow system at one of its stores in its headquarter city of Pittsburgh.

The grocer installed an RxSafe 1800 system from San Diego-based RxSafe, LLC. “When we decided we wanted to investigate an automation system for our pharmacies, we looked for providers that had the required technology and the highest level of expertise,” said Randy Heiser, VP, pharmacy for Giant Eagle.

The RxSafe system is a comprehensive pharmacy workflow automation system for prescription medication in native packaging. The system was designed to help pharmacies accurately fill and track prescriptions, manage inventory, eliminate theft and diversion, and avoid expired product. The customizable RxSafe system stores and automates up to 5,400 native prescription containers in less than 40 square feet of space and realizes a peak capacity of up to 500 scripts per hour in multi-operator mode, according to the vendor.

Giant Eagle operates 168 corporate and 58 independently owned and operated supermarkets in addition to 157 fuel and convenience stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia, and Maryland.
