Giant-Landover Opens Prototype in Delaware

Giant Food is opening its latest prototype store, a 51,994-square-foot Super Giant, in Long Neck, Del. today. The full-service food and pharmacy combination store incorporates Giant's new store layout, including its new decor, new store signage, and larger food and pharmacy departments, in what the company describes as "a state-of-the-art energy-efficient building."

Offerings include a new cheese shop with over 200 varieties of imported and domestic, and an assortment of prepared foods. Other highlights include a large assortment of natural foods; a Best Sellers department selling books, movies, magazines, and videos; a toy and party goods section, a home goods section; a Staples brand home and office supply section; a new value aisle stocked with advertised sale items; and an ethnic food section containing a variety of Hispanic, Thai, and other Asian food selections.

Additional services and conveniences include Western Union money orders and wire transfers, Rug Doctor rentals, an ATM, Giant Gift Cards, phone cards, and postage stamps.

"Our shoppers will experience an exceptional selection of prepared foods, quality perishable, and nonperishable products, and a friendly staff dedicated to a high level of customer service," noted Giant Food e.v.p. and g.m. Robin Michel. "Approximately 110 new jobs will be created with the opening of the Long Neck Super Giant."

Among the environmentally friendly features are high-efficiency cooling and heating systems; a white membrane roof that reflects, rather than absorbs solar energy; and infrared-actuated faucets and toilet flush valves that conserve water usage. All of these features are monitored by centrally located microcomputers to help reduce the amount of energy required to operate the new store.

Grand opening activities will go on all day, with entertainment, food sampling, prizes, and face-painting activities for kids on tap. Proceeds from a three-day hot dog and soda sidewalk sale will go to the Cape Henlopen Food Basket, an organization providing emergency food assistance to needy individuals and families.

Giant Food operates 183 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 21,000 associates. Included within the 183 stores are 164 full-service pharmacies.
