Hannaford to Have Bottle Return Centers at More Maine Stores

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Supermarkets here is expanding its "Drop & Go" bottle return centers to more stores in Maine, according to CLYNK, which markets the return center program.

The company currently has centers at four Maine Hannaford stores, in Windham, Scarborough, Sanford, and York, and hopes to roll out 25 to 30 more centers in Maine Hannaford locations over the next 18 months or so, CLYNK spokesman Frank Whittier told Progressive Grocer.

"Introducing the CLYNK 'Drop & Go' system is an example of how Hannaford enhances the shopping experience for our customers," said Hannaford spokeswoman Caren Epstein.

"We have spent over two years developing this innovative recycling technology with Hannaford," noted CLYNK c.e.o. Tracy Hawkins in a statement. "Together we have built an industry leading solution."

CLYNK's system signs up customers for a Drop & Go card linked to a unique online account. The customer takes home CLYNK bags and tags, fills a bag with returnable bottles and cans, tags the bag, and drops it off at the nearest CLYNK bottle return at a Hannaford supermarket. The cans and bottles are then processed off-site, employing CLYNK's proprietary technology, and the value is loaded into customers' accounts.

CLYNK is also based in Scarborough, Maine.
