Hannaford Introduces Community-based Pharmacy Benefits Plan

Hannaford Supermarkets is rolling out a community-based pharmacy benefits plan for employers in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York, in partnership with Greenwood Village, Colo.-based health care management solutions company HealthTrans.

"Employers are challenged with keeping their employees happy and healthy while seeking new ways to contain health care costs," noted Hannaford v.p. of pharmacy Millard Nance. "The patient-centric prescription benefit plan rewards employees with best-of-class service, and employers with desired cost savings and improved workplace productivity."

Hannaford's value-based plan design will enable employees to receive better prescription benefits, without paying increased premiums, according to the chain. The plan can be tailored to grant as much flexibility as needed to meet an employer's overall business goals.

Also, employers and employees will benefit from an accessible network of community-based clinical pharmacists and pharmacies that provide comprehensive services such as clinical prescription management, disease management, specialty pharmacy, and health-and-wellness care. Pharmacy services are regionally located in 127 stores, serving hundreds of communities in the Northeast.

Among the features of the value-based plan design are a regionally focused, nonrestrictive network that provides cost incentives to both employees and employer, when filling prescriptions at a Hannaford pharmacy; access to a large network of clinical pharmacists providing health-and-wellness services; full-service in-store pharmacies; a value-based formulary with a preferred drug list that focuses on balancing lowest net medication cost with a broad spectrum of choices; and a value-based plan design that rewards employees who make economical choices.

Scarborough, Maine-based Hannaford operates 167 stores in Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
