Harris Teeter, Foodmaster, Kroger Win National 'Beef Backer' Awards

CENTENNIAL, Colo. - The National Cattlemen's Beef Association named Harris Teeter, Foodmaster Supermarkets, and The Kroger Co. winners of the Beef Checkoff's first annual national Retail Beef Backer Awards program. NCBA said it cited the trio of retailers for their commitment to outstanding beef marketing and merchandising programs.

"The Retail Beef Backer Awards Program is one way beef producers can show their appreciation to retailers for the exceptional work they do to increase beef demand," said Jim Henger, executive director of retail marketing for NCBA, which contracts to manage retail programs for the Beef Checkoff. "We are excited to award these winners for their hard work over the last year."

Besides demonstrations of merchandising excellence at the meat case, a third-party judging panel took into consideration the retailers' tie-ins with Beef Checkoff-funded programs such as Easy Fresh Cooking labels, Beef Training Camp, Summer Grilling promotions, the Beef Value Cuts program, and on-pack nutrition labeling.

"We were very impressed with the 2007 contest submissions and how retailers increased beef demand with the beef Checkoff," said Henger. "We welcome all retailers to submit an application for the 2008 contest."

Winners will receive an expenses-paid trip to the 2009 Cattle Industry Annual Convention & Trade Show, exposure in major trade publications, and recognition at the 2009 Annual Meat Conference.
