SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Wane McGarity, former wide receiver Dallas Cowboys and a native Texan, has joined H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here as health and wellness program manager.
In the newly created position, McGarity will be responsible for the strategic and tactical execution of HEB's health and wellness initiatives in communities across the state, the chain said. McGarity will work with community organizations and school districts in Texas to launch outreach efforts, HEB said.
His game plan will include outreach on the issue of childhood obesity in Texas, as well as creating programs to improve nutrition and increase physical activity both for children and their parents.
McGarity will also work internally to integrate the health and wellness efforts among HEB's advertising and marketing, public affairs, and store operations divisions.
"Texas is faced with a challenge when it comes to the future health of our children," said McGarity. "I look forward to leading the great team assembled at HEB that is ready to meet this challenge head-on to improve the health of our Texas community."
McGarity has had a solid base in health and nutrition as a star collegiate and pro athlete. He was an All-America receiver at the University of Texas at Austin, and had four seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, and later at the New Orleans Saints.
Following his professional football career, McGarity returned to UT Austin to finish his degree, and served as an intern in the university's football program, where he oversaw the team's strength training programs and assisted with its running camps. Most recently, McGarity served as a fitness specialist for Xtreme Speed in San Antonio, where he designed and oversaw training programs for local athletes.
