HEB's Central Market Recalls Serrano Peppers

Central Market yesterday said it was recalling raw serrano peppers after a warning from the FDA, which advised consumers to avoid serrano peppers because of the danger of salmonella poisoning.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and view this as a necessary step to ensure the safety of our customers," said Winell Herron of HEB, parent company of Central Market. "The recall is voluntary and only a precaution. None of our customers has reported any illness. We will return the product to our stores once it is determined safe to consume."

The salmonella strain linked to a nationwide outbreak has been found in irrigation water and in a sample from a batch of Serrano peppers at a Mexican farm, federal health officials said Wednesday.
