Here Come the Kiwis

With Zespri Kiwifruit on schedule for a mid-May start at a volume consistent with 2009 levels, the items will be supported at retail and foodservice “with marketing programs designed to boost awareness and purchase intent among consumers looking for the best value in flavor, versatility and nutrition,” noted Karen Brux, market manager for Redwood City, Calif.-based Zespri International North America.

The supplier additionally offers advice for retailers on its Web site, www.zesprikiwi.com, including carrying multiple varieties of kiwifruit, offering samples, building bigger displays, advertising with in-store flyers and cross-promoting with meats.

Zespri projects Green Kiwifruit availability through November, and Gold availability through September.

After a hot, dry summer, brix levels are at historic high levels — which means sweeter, more flavorful fruit. Additionally, New Zealand offers a unique environment for growing kiwifruit: fertile volcanic soil and artesian irrigation water from the country’s mountain ranges.

Growers of Zespri Kiwifruit set strict standards for growing, managing, harvesting, shipping and selling their product, and a multipoint check system guarantees consistent excellence in the taste, appearance and size of the fruit.
