Herring Appointed Giant-Carlisle Division President

Ahold USA said yesterday that Rick Herring has been promoted to the position of division president of its Giant-Carlisle division, which consists of 152 stores in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia under the names of Giant Food Stores, Martin’s, Food Markets and Giant To Go.

Herring, who will report to Carl Schlicker, CEO of Quincy, Mass.-based Ahold USA Retail, succeeds Sander van der Laan who has been appointed general manager of Albert Heijn in the Netherlands. A Dutch national, van der Laan became president and CEO of Giant-Carlisle in July 2008.

A 20-year Giant-Carlisle veteran, Herring has been the Carlisle, Pa.-based division’s EVP of finance and became CFO in 2003. He also played a key role in organizing Ahold Financial Services, Ahold USA’s shared financial service center, which is also in Carlisle.

Herring is a certified public accountant with memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Ahold USA, part of Amsterdam-based global retail conglomerate Ahold, comprises four divisions operating over 700 supermarkets in 11 states and the District of Columbia: Stop & Shop/Metro NY, Stop & Shop/New England, Giant-Landover, and Giant-Carlisle. In addition, Ahold USA operates online grocery shopping and delivery service Peapod.
