Hy-Vee Aims to 'Make a Difference' With Holiday Donation

Hy-Vee this week kicked off its 10-day, 10-city and 10,000-turkey initiative that aims to fight hunger and help those in need this Thanksgiving season.

Turkeys have been delivered, or are on their way, to Midwest communities including Lincoln, Neb.; Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Des Moines and Mason City, Iowa; Rochester, Minn.; the Kansas City metro in Mo./Kan.; the Quad Cities in metro Iowa/Ill.; Omaha, Neb.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Madison, Wis.

"As a grocery store and member of this community, Hy-Vee is committed to fighting hunger," said Randy Edeker, CEO of the W. Des Moines, Iowa-based retailer. "To accomplish this goal, we look for ways in which we can make a difference by assisting local hunger relief organizations to help families in need within our communities."

Hy-Vee's donation of 10,000 turkeys equates to 50 tons, or 100,000 pounds of turkey, which will feed approximately 100,000 people this Thanksgiving.

Employee-owned Hy-Vee operates 234 retail stores in eight Midwestern states. For 2013, the company recorded sales of $8 billion, ranking it among the top 25 supermarket chains and the top 50 private companies in the United States.
