Weis Markets Launches Believe In Heroes Campaign

Weis Markets has launched its fourth annual Believe in Heroes campaign, joining forces with Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), an organization that raises awareness and enlists public support for the needs of injured service members.

Believe in Heroes, which launched in Weis stores Nov. 2 and runs through the end of the month, calls on Americans to show their appreciation for this generation of veterans through everyday grocery shopping. In the past three years, Weis Markets’ customers raised $300,000 for WWP.

“As we begin our fourth year with Believe in Heroes, we know now more than ever that our servicemen and women are in need of our support as they return to their civilian lives,” said Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets COO. “Our customers have shown substantial support for this program and we anticipate our 2014 campaign to be a huge success.”

Weis Markets’ customers may contribute to the Believe in Heroes program by purchasing select products with the special WWP label. Customers may also purchase WWP bracelets or magnets selling for $1 each, and reusable tote bags for $2.99. 

Founded in 2003, Wounded Warrior Project was created to raise awareness of, and honor and empower service members returning from post-9/11 conflicts who suffer from both visible and invisible wounds of war.

Weis Raises $90,000 for Local Food Banks

Also at Weis, the grocer used the occasion of Hunger Action Month in September to raise $90,000 for local food banks and emergency food providers in its service area.  

“We are committed to the communities we serve. Over the past seven years, we’ve raised more than $1 million for local food banks and pantries throughout our market area,” Schertle said. “This year’s donation total will benefit more than 100 local hunger organizations who serve thousands of people a day. Every dollar raised will provide up to six meals for those in need. We are truly grateful for our customers support.”

Customers were able to donate shelf-stable items, as well as purchase $2, $4 and $6 vouchers during the checkout process. They could also round up their orders. All proceeds were donated to area food banks to help fill gaps in food supplies. Weis Markets’ stores also offered pre-filled Fight Hunger donation boxes containing pasta, sauce, fruit, vegetables, tuna, cereal and soup — all for less than $10.

The Fight Hunger Food Drive benefited local food banks and pantries throughout Weis Markets five-state market area. Regional food banks, who helped coordinate local pick-ups, also participated in the program.

Founded in 1912, Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Markets operates 163 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
