ACNielsen and BIGResearch to Address Retail Merchandiser Dollar Summit

NEW YORK -- ACNielsen Homescan director Gary Crisafulli and Joe Pilotta, v.p. of research for Worthington, Ohio-based BIGreserach, are among the speakers who will head up the educational portion of Dollar Summit V, in April, convened by Retail Merchandiser. Both Retail Merchandiser and Progressive Grocer are owned by VNU Business Media.

Crisafulli, a 20-year veteran of ACNielsen who's considered an expert in store level analytics and consumer panel analytics, will present recent data on the extreme-value retail segment and its shoppers. Topics will include store growth and strategies, retail movers and shakers, consumer shopping behavior, and top-selling items and categories. Crisafulli will also examine new opportunities and potential threats to this growing segment. ACNielsen has been a regular participant in RM's Dollar Summit since the Summit's inception two years ago. (Summits are held twice a year.)

Pilotta's presentation will focus on the low-income segment of extreme-value shoppers, examining the sociological factors that dictate lifestyle and shopping behaviors. He will discuss various segments of the low-income population, ranging from the working poor, recent immigrants, and "situational" low wage earners, to "generational" victims of lifetime poverty.

Pilotta holds two Ph.Ds, from Ohio University and the University of Toronto, and has conducted 60 online studies in consumer behavior over the past three years. He has authored 11 books and more than 110 academic and professional presentations.

Retail Merchandiser's fifth Dollar and Value Retailing Summit will be held April 3-5, 2005 at the Sonesta Hotel and Resort, Miami Beach, Fla. The series of one-on-one private meetings is expected to draw execs from the major dollar store and value retail chains and nationally branded CPG suppliers across the U.S. and Canada. Family Dollar, 99 Cents Only, Supervalu and Big Lots are among retailers participating.
