Ahold’s Astrachan Assumes PBH Chair Duties

Andrea Astrachan of Ahold USA has assumed her post as chair of Produce for Better Health Foundation’s (PBH) board from outgoing chairman Chair Paul Klutes, of C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. during the group’s annual meeting last week.

Other produce industry executives who will serve PBH in new roles include Roger Pepperl of Stemilt Growers, Inc. as vice chairman, and Paul Palmby of Seneca Foods Corp. as secretary/treasurer. Marty Ordman of Dole Food Co., Inc. was elected chair of PBH’s consumer marketing and communications committee, and Mac Riggan of Chelan Fresh Marketing assumed chairmanship of the foundation’s donor marketing and outreach committee.

In addition to officers and committee chairs, the following people were elected to serve as at-large members of PBH's executive committee:

—Rick Bruno, Sun-Maid Growers of California
—Gaines Chamberlain, Food Lion Stores, Inc.
—Dionysios (Dennis) Christou, Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc.
—Lori Miller, McDonald’s Corp.
—Heather Mizrahi, The Walt Disney Co.
—Jim Sarcletti, Save-A-Lot Food Stores
—Suzanne Wolter, Rainier Fruit Co.

“I wish new chair Andrea Astrachan all the best,” said Paul Klutes, immediate past chair of Hockissin-Del.-based PBH. “It has been my pleasure to serve as chairman and I look forward to continuing to support PBH and spreading the message that eating more fruits and vegetables really does matter to better health!”

In other PBH news, the foundation has named 14 Role Models and four Champions for their staunch support of the Fruits & Veggies-More Matters national public health initiative in 2009. The companies were honored during PBH’s Role Model Recognition Luncheon at the organization’s annual Board of Trustees meeting April 10 in Half Moon Bay, Calif.

The nine retailer Role Models were Ahold USA, A&P, Food Lion, Kroger, Safeway, Save Mart, Schnucks, Supervalu and Weis Markets. Two retailers, Associated Wholesale Grocers and Meijer, achieved Champion status.

On the supplier side, five attained the Role Model designation — Chelan Fresh Marketing, C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Rainier Fruit Co., Stemilt and Welch’s — while two, Giorgio Fresh Mushrooms and Phillips Gourmet Mushrooms, were recognized as Champions.

"[T]hese Role Models and Champions went above and beyond in their diverse support of the Fruits and Veggies-More Matters brand and PBH,” noted foundation president and CEO Elizabeth Pivonka.

To achieve either status, a donor must consistently demonstrate a wide range of support for Fruits & Veggies-More Matters in such categories as placing the logo on packaging, products and in-store materials, and including the initiative logo on promotional materials and in-store signage.
