Ahold Banners' Local Charity Programs Hit New High at $25M in 2006

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Ahold banners Giant Food Stores, LLC; Martin's Food Markets; and Tops Markets said this week that they made their largest charitable donations ever last year: Giant and Martin's contributed over $13.5 million in combined cash and product contributions in 2006, while Tops donated over $11.7 million, for a combined total of $25 million.

The donations were earmarked for beneficiaries of the "Living Here, Giving Here" program, which includes local hunger-related organizations, Children's Miracle Network hospitals, and area nonprofits.

Contributions came from customers, associates, and vendors of the banners, said the retailer.

"Giant has long been a proud supporter of local charities and food banks in the communities we serve and without the overwhelming generosity and support of our customers and associates we would not be able achieve that mission," said Giant Food president and c.e.o. Carl Schlicker in a statement.

The banners helped local organizations through donations at both the corporate and store levels. Giant's beneficiaries included regional food banks, Children's Miracle Network, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the regional USO, area schools, and the United Way. Among Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops' chosen charities were the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Salvation Army.

Giant Food Stores operates stores in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia under the Giant Food Stores, TOPS Markets, Martin's Food Markets and "foodsource" banners.
