A&P’s Christian Haub Gets Human Rights Award
Christian W. E. Haub, executive chairman for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. has received a 2008 Annual Human Rights Award from the Jewish Labor Committee (JLC). The honor was bestowed in recognition of Haub’s efforts to preserve the quality of work-life balance for A&P employees.
Haub was one of three honorees presented with the award at a dinner held in New York City this week. At the event were members of local, national, and international trade unions; the JLC executive board, and allied community organizations and Jewish agencies, in addition to board members, vendors, and other associates.
The Jewish Labor Committee is an independent secular organization that helps the Jewish community and trade unions work together on key issues of shared interest and concern. The JLC Human Rights Awards recognize individuals from the business world with a commitment to human rights as shown by acknowledgment of the value of unionization and their employees, and belief in the idea that the dignity of work elevates the human spirit.
“I am honored…to be recognized for the work and dedication of our associates -- who drive our business growth,” noted Haub, who first joined A&P in 1991 as v.p., development & strategic planning and a member of the board of directors.
Two years later Haub became president and c.o.o., and was also named co-c.e.o. in April 1997. In 1998 Haub rose to the role of president and c.e.o. He was elected chairman of the board in 2001, and became executive chairman four years later.
A&P operates 447 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum's, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh and Food Basics.
