A&P Donates $875,000 to MDA

MONTVALE, N.J. -- The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P) here presented contribution checks representing its year-round fund-raising efforts for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) during the charity's 41st annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon Sept. 3 to Sept. 4 in Las Vegas.

A&P representatives gave contributions of $875,000 to MDA national chairman Jerry Lewis and telethon co-hosts during the famous 21-and-a-half-hour fundraising broadcast. The telethon reached about 50 million viewers through 190 MDA "Love Network" TV stations, and was seen worldwide on the Web, courtesy of RealNetworks.

Lewis said in a statement: "Money raised by A&P will help MDA continue to advance its research, service, and information programs, enabling us to bring greater help and hope to the families MDA serves."

A&P v.p. of strategic marketing Bob James and director of communication relations Liz Lucadamo represented the Northeast on the telethon broadcast.

A&P has been an MDA national sponsor for one year. Its employees and customers raise money for the association all year round via the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy mobiles, the Aisles of Smiles program and mobiles, vendor golf tournaments, and volunteer work at the MDA summer camp in Spring Valley, N.Y.

Employing over 42,000 associates, A&P operates 404 stores in the United States under eight retail banners, which include conventional supermarkets, food-and-drug combination stores, and discount food stores.
