A&P Raises Record Amount in Golf Tournament for MDA
MONTVALE, N.J. -- The 2006 Food Emporium Charity Golf Classic, presented by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. here, raised about $325,000 to benefit the Tri-State area offices of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) -- the highest-ever amount garnered by the annual tournament, which began in 1996.
To date, the tournament has donated nearly $2 million to MDA's continuing efforts in the fight against neuromuscular disease.
More than 400 golfers representing A&P supermarkets and the vendor community took part in this year's event, which was held July 17 at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Far Hills, N.J.
After the tournament, golfers and sponsors attended a dinner and several auction events, for which items were donated by area businesses, with all proceeds going to MDA. Additionally, companies enrolled to sponsor campers at MDA's upcoming Summer Camps. These annual camps provide a week of recreational activities specially adapted to the needs and abilities of children with neuromuscular diseases, at no charge to campers' families.
A&P will also shortly launch its "Aisles of Smiles" campaign for MDA, according the organization's regional public affairs coordinator, Sarah Minkus.
