Delhaize Streamlines Supply Chain With RedPrairie Online Portal

Supermarket chain Delhaize will optimize its supply chain with the scheduling and collaboration functionality of the RedPrairie Transportation Management System. Five Delhaize distribution centers will employ the solution to manage inbound deliveries more efficiently and optimize dock usage. About 1,500 suppliers will plan their deliveries using the online collaboration portal. The facilities serve 775 points of sale in Belgium. The solution is scheduled to be up and running by mid-year.

Delhaize chose the RedPrairie Transportation Management module after evaluating five other vendors. RedPrairie met all functional requirements and offered a user-friendly interface. Further, because the scheduling and collaboration portal is part of a complete Transportation Management suite, it offers opportunities for future expansion.

Using the collaboration portal, suppliers will plan their deliveries themselves. Warehouse planners will monitor the plan and adapt it where needed; suppliers will then receive an automatic notification. Delhaize will thus manage stock levels and ensure that inbound deliveries perfectly match dock availability. Planning at the DCs is currently a manual process resulting in long wait times for trucks arriving at the facilities.

"The RedPrairie Transportation Management solution is an essential part of our new logistics infrastructure,” noted Jurgen Limbourg, supply chain coordinator at Brussels-based Delhaize. “With this solution, we can easily manage the arrival of trucks. We know how long an average delivery takes and will be able to compare that against the actual time taken. This allows us to make suppliers accountable for their performance."

“Our scheduling and collaboration solution will allow Delhaize to streamline their supply chain and help them stay ahead in the competitive grocery industry,” said Martin Hiscox, president & managing director, international at RedPrairie, whose global headquarters is in Waukesha, Wis., but which has an office in Ninove, Belgium.

One of the largest supermarket chains in Belgium, Delhaize has subsidiaries in other countries, including Greece, Romania and the United States (under the brands Food Lion, Hannaford and Sweetbay). The grocer has five distribution centers in Belgium and 1,500 suppliers with a total of 170,000 truck moves.
