First Northern California Wal-Mart Supercenter Opens Today

STOCKTON, Calif. - Wal-Mart opens its first supercenter in Northern California at 8 a.m. today. The store, on East Hammer Lane here, features more than 100,000 products, including general merchandise and a full line of groceries.

Area consumers will find a wide assortment of products and services at the supercenter, including:

-- 20,000 grocery products, including bakery goods, frozen foods, meats, seafood, dairy products, fresh produce, and ethnic foods.

-- Over 100,000 total products, ranging from fashion apparel to home furnishings, cookware to pet care, and everything in between.

-- Products and produce from suppliers statewide, including many in the Stockton area, such as Stemilt Growers, which runs cherry and apple orchards and packing facilities, and supplies fresh fruit to Wal-Mart supercenters.

-- Specialty departments and services, including a portrait studio, Tire & Lube Express, pharmacy, vision center, California Nails, hair salon, and Memorial Home Med-Equip.

-- 21 full-service, six express, and eight self-checkout lanes, for a total of 31 checkouts.

The new supercenter, which offers 24-hour shopping, replaces a traditional Wal-Mart that opened in 1991. Of the 900 employees who have been hired to work at the new location, 400 of them transferred from the old store. According to the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer, there were over 4,000 applicants for the 500 new jobs.

Wal-Mart opened its first supercenter in California last March in La Quinta. Next week the company will open its third California supercenter, in the Southern California city of Hemet.
