Food Lion Promotes Local Products in the Carolinas

Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion LLC said yesterday some of its stores are supporting local farmers and food companies in North Carolina and South Carolina via two special campaigns this month.

In North Carolina, the "Got To Be NC Products" promotional campaign is being held June 11-24. The promotion will be taking place at all Food Lion, Bloom, and Bottom Dollar Food stores in North Carolina.

During the promotion, sales fliers will feature North Carolina products. In addition, some stores will have local vendor in-store samplings and wine tastings, and will be visited by the 2008 North Carolina Watermelon Queen. Additionally, the "Got To Be NC" Big Cart, a promotional vehicle, will be making appearances throughout the state to emphasize the numerous agricultural products grown and produced there.

Agriculture is the No. 1 industry in North Carolina and contributes approximately $68 billion to the economy, according to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Science.

Food Lion LLC's Tar Heel State stores, now in their fourth year with the promotion, will call increased attention to North Carolina products with special displays, shelf tags, and biographies on local farmers, the retailer said.

The effort is part of Food Lion LLC's ongoing partnership with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and its "Goodness Grows in North Carolina" program.

In South Carolina, meanwhile, Food Lion stores are supporting the Certified South Carolina program, a new cooperative effort among producers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture to brand and promote South Carolina products.

During the promotion, which runs in Food Lion, Bloom, and Bottom Dollar Food stores from June 11-24, South Carolina products will be touted in sales fliers, booklets, and sampling. Some stores will be visited by the 2008 South Carolina Watermelon Queen.

This is Food Lion's first year officially working with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture to promote locally grown vendors, and stores will feature special displays, shelf tags, and biographies of local farmers.
