Food Lion Selling Exclusive Imported Pasta in Some Delis

SALISBURY, N.C. -- In a move to add more high-quality, convenient items to its product mix, Food Lion here has begun offering Bertagni fresh filled pastas from Italy in more than 400 of its stores, via an exclusive partnership with Sterling Foods, Inc.

Merchandised in the deli-bakery department, Bertagni fresh pastas contain no artificial flavorings or colorings and are filled with only fresh ingredients. Food Lion is the first U.S. grocer to offer the pastas.

"Bertagni fresh filled pastas offer the authentic taste of tortellini from Bologna, Italy, handed down from original recipes and the traditional ways of preparation," said Petra Abbeloos, Food Lion category manager, in a statement. "We think our customers will enjoy the unique taste and superb quality."

Food Lion's Bertagni offering includes Porcini Mushroom Tortellini, Spinach Ricotta Ravioli, Tomato Mozzarella Ravioli, Cheese Tortellini, and Gorgonzola and Walnut Ravioli, all priced at $3.69. The pastas can be prepared in boiling water in just a few minutes. Each type of pasta comes packaged in a paper carton and has a 50-day shelf life.

Bertagni is the oldest manufacturer of tortellini in the world, according to Food Lion. Luigi Bertagni first made tortellini in his Bologna, Italy, shop in 1882.

Food Lion LLC, a subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, operates 1,300 supermarkets, either directly or through affiliated entities, under the names of Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, Harveys and Reid's.
