Foodservice Supply Trends:<br />New Product Lines = Greener, Affordable, Efficient

Manufacturers of foodservice supplies have stayed abreast of the industry’s overwhelming themes of value, cost savings and sustainability with the introduction of new products and line extensions that fulfill those mandates.

For instance, Fabri-Kal has added a new stock design to its Greenware family of annually renewable cold drink cups, portion cups, and lids made entirely from plants instead of petroleum.

The design is available for the full line of Greenware cold drink cups in 7-, 9-, 10-, 12-, 16-, 20- and 24-ounce sizes, and Greenware portion cups in 2-, 3.25- and 4-ounce sizes.

Made in the United States from Ingeo biopolymer, the Greenware product line is 100 percent compostable in actively managed municipal or industrial facilities. They were used at last year’s Boeing Classic PGA tournament in Fabri-Kal’s Kalamazoo, Mich., hometown as part of the Boeing Classic’s first “Striving for Zero Waste” effort, where 92 percent of the overall volume of waste was either recycled or composted.

International Paper has introduced Hold & Go, a new double-wall, insulated paper hot cup featuring the company’s patent-pending ThermaShield technology, which creates insulating air pockets in the cup’s structure, lowering external surface temperatures and resulting in longer consumer hold times.

Made of fiber from responsibly managed forests that meet Sustainable Forestry Initiative standards, the Hold & Go cup comes in 12-, 16- and 20-ounce sizes, and is available in two stock prints: Old World and Carte Blanc. It can also be customized with high-quality, six-color print capability to help customers enhance their branding. One Hold & Go lid fits all three sizes and is available in both black and white.

Anchor Packaging has added 10 new SKUs to its redesigned MicroRaves M700 Series. The new items use advanced engineering techniques, resulting in a 25 percent reduction in petroleum-based resin, while providing a structurally stronger container.

The latest additions include four platters, four interchangeable matching lids and two combo packs in a single footprint, which minimizes SKUs while covering the needs of virtually all entrée meals. Polypropylene vented anti-fogging lids are available for hot displays and warming units, and, along with the polypropylene platters, will withstand temperatures up to 230F. A cold lid, made of clear PET, is for cold-case merchandising. The platters are available in a 32-ounce size and a 48-ounce deep version, as well as two-compartment and three-compartment meal options. A hot lid 32-ounce combo pack and a cold lid 32-ounce combo pack fill out the line. All platters have a positive stack feature that interlocks with any other platter in the series for stacking for display, or in the bag.

All of the hot platters and lids are microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe, and consumer reusable and recyclable. The recyclable cold lid is made of #1 PETE, the most widely recycled plastic material nationwide.

InnoWare Plastic, Inc. has launched a line of microwavable Expressions two-piece foodservice containers made from Advanta, a proprietary polypropylene blend that uses 30 percent less plastic than standard polypropylene.

The Advanta blend requires fewer structural ribs for strength, allowing for cleaner and more contemporary designs. It also maintains food-serving temperatures longer, and the clear polypropylene lids are vented to maintain quality and enhance the appearance of food. Both bases and lids are reusable and recyclable, and carry the #5 recycle mark.

InnoWare’s Expressions line features a plate-like design in shallow, deep and three-compartment configurations. The mix-and-match lids and bases close firmly on all four corners for a tight seal. There is secure nesting and stacking for storage, preparation and to-go applications.

Products made from Advanta have a black satin finish with a temperature range of -20 degrees Fahrenheit to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Expressions are also available in PETE, which is safe for cold foods and made from at least 50 percent post-industrial recycled material. Expressions lids in PETE are glossy and clear, and are designed to fit the Advanta bases.

In addition, Expressions are available in InnoWare’s ECO brand “Return to Nature” — cold-food containers made from plant material and commercially compostable.
