FreshDirect Using Green Boxes for Food Deliveries

NEW YORK - Regional online grocer FreshDirect this week began transitioning its corrugated cardboard delivery boxes to boxes made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper.

"We know that many FreshDirect customers are environmentally conscious citizens and, with our new boxes, we can ensure that customers' orders are not only fresh and protected, but environmentally friendly," said Steve Michaelson, president and c.e.o. of FreshDirect.

FreshDirect said it is getting the boxes from Southern Container Corp., a manufacturer of corrugated boxes that receives its own source of supply through a 100-percent recycled containerboard mill, Solvay Paperboard LLC. FreshDirect began converting to the Southern Container Corp. boxes in April 2007, and will fully change over to the new boxes by the end of May.

FreshDirect serves most of Manhattan and parts of Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. It also has routes in New Jersey, Westchester, and Nassau County. All told the online grocer said it has fulfilled more than five million orders since opening for business in September 2002.
