Giant-Carlisle/Tops, Pathmark Raise Funds for Children's Miracle Network

CARLISLE, Pa. and CARTERET, N.J. -- In two separate efforts, Giant-Carlisle and Pathmark Stores are driving charitable contributions to benefit the Children's Miracle Network, the alliance of premier hospitals for children.

Almost 1,500 golfers are expected to participate in Giant Food Stores' 10th annual Our Kids Golf Tournament today, which in tandem with recent store-based fundraising initiatives is expected to raise $1.4 million.

So far, Giant has raised more than $14 million to support the organization in the Philadelphia; Harrisburg, Pa.; Baltimore; Washington D.C., Danville/Altoona, Pa.; and Buffalo, N.Y. areas. Tops Markets has taken part in the tournament for the past three years.

"Each year for the past 10 years, the Giant family of associates, sponsors, and local partners has teed up to support brave children who are fighting for good health," said Giant Foods president and c.e.o. Tony Schiano. "It warms our hearts to fund state-of-the-art care, life-saving research, and community awareness delivered by exceptional children's hospitals located in the communities where we live and operate."

This year's event, which will again involve former patients of Children's Miracle Network hospitals and their families, will employ 11 courses, bringing together Giant Foods and Tops associates, local celebrities, and such vendor sponsors as Acosta Sales and Marketing Co., Advantage Sales and Marketing, C&S, Kraft, and Universal Media.

In other Children's Miracle Network news, Pathmark Stores, Inc. said last week that it had raised $561,000 in funds for the organization, more than doubling the amount donated last year and representing the most the grocer has collected for the organization during a 13-year partnership.

Shoppers at all 141 Pathmark stores made donations. Fundraising programs included the retailer's Root Beer Float program on June 3 and June 4 in which patrons received a root beer float in exchange for a $1 donation. Pathmark associates also held numerous fundraisers internally to collect contributions.

Noted Pathmark c.e.o. John Standley: "I am extremely gratified and thankful to all those customers, members of the vendor community, and Pathmark associates who contributed to this worthwhile cause. Pathmark is pleased to continue its support of Children's Miracle Network, which provides much needed financial assistance to local community health care facilities that deal with children's health. We look forward to next year and the challenge of surpassing the amount raised in 2006."
