Giant Eagle Launches Discounted Generic Scripts Program in Ohio

PITTSBURGH - The deeply discounted generic drug movement picked up more steam late last week when Giant Eagle, Inc. here unveiled an extensive discounted generic prescription drug program in all of its Ohio supermarket pharmacies.

The program will make commonly prescribed dosages, of up to a 30-day supply, of 292 generic prescription medications available to Giant Eagle Pharmacy customers for only $4. In addition to its $4 everyday pricing on these generic prescription drugs, Giant Eagle is also expanding its free generic prescription drug program to all Ohio markets. Last month, the company launched a test program in Columbus and Toledo to provide free generic prescription medications during the cough and cold season.

Giant Eagle's move follows Wal-Mart decision to lower prices on 314 commonly used generic prescriptions to $4 for a month's supply at all of its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in Ohio. Rival retailer Target matched that deal in all of its pharmacies statewide. Giant Eagle started offering a limited number of free generic prescriptions in stores in Columbus and Toledo last month.

The chain said the initiative has produced a positive customer response and has been expanded to include 56 drugs provided free of charge.

To receive the free medications or discounted price on the qualifying prescriptions, customers may present a prescription and their Giant Eagle Advantage Card inside any of the 93 Giant Eagle Pharmacy locations throughout Ohio.

Giant Eagle said its generic prescription programs are an extension of its continued focus to take costs out of its internal operations and to invest the savings in lower everyday prices for its customers. Efforts to fund this most recent price reduction action include better-negotiated costs and buying processes as well as a broadening of the supplier pool for pharmaceuticals.

In other Giant Eagle news, the company also temporarily doubled its fuelperks! gasoline discounts when consumers purchase other retailers' gift cards. The supermarket chain is offering a 20 cent per gallon discount at GetGo fuel and convenience store locations for every $50 spent using the Giant Eagle Advantage Card on other retailers' gift cards. The offer runs from Nov. 2 through Dec. 27.
