GS1 US Elects FMI, GMA CEOs to Board of Governors

Supply chain standards organization GS1 US has elected Pamela G. Bailey, president and CEO of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), and Leslie G. Sarasin, president and CEO of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), to its board of governors.

“Pam and Leslie represent two important business constituencies, and will be extremely valuable voices on the GS1 US board of governors,” said Bob Carpenter, CEO of the Lawrenceville, N.J.-based organization. “They bring a breadth of perspectives and experience that will help ensure GS1 US remains on the leading edge of thought and innovation in the supply chain, from production to the point of sale.”

The board includes executives from the Coca-Cola Co., CVS/pharmacy, Johnson & Johnson, the Kroger Co., McKesson Corp., the Premier health care alliance, Procter & Gamble, Publix Super Markets, Sam’s Club, J.M. Smucker Co., Unilever and Wegmans Food Markets, in addition to executives from GS1, GS1 Australia, and GS1 Canada.

“Pam and Leslie will further strengthen one of the core competencies of GS1 US: its ability to help forge consensus among different parties in the supply chain,” said Sandy Douglas, chairman of the GS1 US board of governors and also the president of Coca-Cola North America. “Businesses and consumers alike will benefit from the accelerated and enhanced decisions this board can make with their involvement.”

Bailey leads an organization that advocates for the $2.1 trillion food, beverage and consumer packaged goods industry, which employs 14 million workers. “GS1 US has a strong track record of driving efficiencies and innovation within the global supply chain that ultimately provide greater value to consumers,” said Bailey.

Bailey joined GMA in January 2009 from the Personal Care Products Council, where she was president and CEO. She has also been president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association, and was founding CEO and president of the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC), an organization of more than 50 health care industry chief executives. In the 1970s and 1980s, Bailey worked at the White House for three U.S. presidents.

Sarasin joined FMI in November 2008. The association conducts programs in public affairs, food safety, research, education and industry relations on behalf of its 1,500 food retailer and wholesaler members. FMI members represent large multistore chains, regional firms and independent supermarkets, and a combined annual sales volume of $680 billion, which is three-quarters of all retail food store sales in the United States

“The recent launch of the Product Recall Portal is a great example of GS1 US working across all sectors of the food industry to address the critical need to expedite food recalls, benefiting the industry and our customers,” said Sarasin, who added that she was interested in “addressing new and important industry solutions to enhance supply chain innovation, including traceability.”

Previously, Sarasin was president and CEO of American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI). She was also president of the National Yogurt Association, an association that AFFI managed, and had oversight responsibility for the National Frozen Pizza Institute, the Frozen Potato Products Institute, the International Frozen Food Association, the Texas-Mexico Frozen Food Council and the Food Processing Environmental Conference. She has also worked for the National Food Brokers Association, Crest International Corp., Salomon Brothers Investment Bankers and Sen. Wendell H. Ford.
