Hawaiian Retailer Introduces ‘Meatless Mondays’

Down to Earth ALL VEGETARIAN Organic & Natural this week launched its first “Meatless Mondays” sale event, which will take place every Monday at all five of the Honolulu-based retailer’s stores from now on. Each week, customers will receive up to 40 percent off the regular price on selected Preferred Brand items.

“Our goal is to make it easier for everyone to go meatless on Mondays by giving them big savings on great-tasting meat alternatives,” noted Mark Fergusson, Down to Earth’s “chief vegetarian officer. “By eating less meat, people can reduce global warming, protect the environment, and improve their health.”

The April 26 sale offered lower prices on products from the following companies: Amy’s; Follow Your Heart, which makes Vegenaise eggless mayonnaise, Vegan Gourmet fresh natural and organic dressings, and Chicken Free Chicken; Turtle Island Foods, the manufacturer of Tofurky and tempeh; and Wai Lana all-natural supplements, body care products and snacks.

Meatless Monday is a nonprofit initiative of The Monday Campaigns, in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The campaign has historical roots in WWI and WWII USA government food-rationing efforts. With the slogan “One day a week cut out meat,” it has recently grown into a global movement backed by such famous vegetarians Sir Paul McCartney.

Down to Earth, Hawaii’s only all-vegetarian food store chain, operates stores in Honolulu, Kailua and Pearlridge on Oahu; Kahului on Maui; and Hilo on the “Big Island" of Hawaii.
