Idaho Potato Commission Whips Up Spirited Holiday Promo

Retailers can help give back to the community during the holiday season, thanks to a new retail coupon promotion from the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC), in partnership with Country Crock buttery spread.

Unilever and the IPC are teaming up for the “Buy, Get, Give” program, which will run from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, and is designed to both drive sales and promote hunger relief:

  • BUY: any two Country Crock 45-ounce spreads
  • GET: a free bag of Idaho potatoes up to $2
  • GIVE: IPC will give a bag of potatoes to Feeding America for each coupon redeemed, up to 32,000 5-pound bags total, and Country Crock is donating $15,000 to the 35-year-old nationwide network of food banks, the leading domestic hunger-relief charity in the United States.

“Both the shopper and retailer can feel good about helping to give to a family in need during the holidays, thanks to our charity tie-in with Feeding America,” said Seth Pemsler, VP, retail/international, Idaho Potato Commission. “And shoppers will have a strong purchase incentive, since our ‘Buy, Get, Give’ promotion puts the price of premium Idaho potatoes well under the price of non-Idaho potatoes or retail competitors’ potatoes.”

In a limited test program last year, a joint Idaho potato and Country Crock promotion drove growth in both volume and sales for potatoes, the most cooked dish with Country Crock (after spreading on toast). This year, the new “Buy, Get, Give” promotion is receiving significant marketing support that includes mixed signage nationwide, a national FSI, and a new Country Crock television commercial featuring a mashed potatoes dish.
