Jewel-Osco Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Supervalu’s Chicago-based Jewel-Osco subsidiary will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) with “Sabor de la Herencia Hispana” (Taste of Hispanic Heritage), a month-long celebration of culinary events featuring Latino vendor products and authentic Latin American recipes. In tandem with the in-store celebration, the 183-store chain will also host a community reception this Thursday, Sept. 17, at the National Museum of Mexican Art to honor the contributions that Hispanics have made to the community.

In addition to products from local Hispanic vendors, the invitation-only reception will feature unique flavors and cuisines from all over Latin America prepared by students from the St. Augustine Culinary program under the supervision of the head instructor, Chef Rafael Perez.

The event will serve to underscore Jewel-Osco’s support and commitment to the community in a meaningful way, according to the grocery chain’s president, Keith Nielsen. “In particular, this event highlights the robust influence that Latin American culture has had on the culinary landscape,” he noted

During the “Sabor de la Herencia Hispana” reception, Jewel-Osco will honor four social service agencies for their efforts and achievements in enriching the lives of the Hispanic communities they serve, and will present a total of $20,000 in grants to El Valor, Erie House, Mujeres Latinas en Accion and St. Augustine College. Jewel will also recognize La Preferida – which offers a variety of authentic Latino food products -- with its 2009 Outstanding Vendor Award.
