Karns Foods Licenses Scales Management System

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Community-based independent Karns Foods yesterday said it has licensed a scales management system to run the scales of its eight locations from one centralized location.

The system was developed by ADC, Inc., Tampa, Fla., a provider of fresh item management technology. It uses can use an existing intranet or Wide Area Network (WAN) to transmit future-dated item, price, and label information to scales and barcode label printers in all fresh food departments.

One factor in Karns' decision to use the ADC system was its ability to work with scales from various manufacturers, a situation Karns faced following an acquisition. "In 2006, Karns bought a local independent which happened to use a different brand of scales than Karns was currently using," said Rob Murdoch, Karns' IT director. "We were interested in keeping both scale systems. The InterScale v5.3 software from ADC allows us to manage our scale communications over our network as the bridge between our proprietary host software and our scales."

The new ADC system worked well with both the old and the new Karns scales because InterScale can work with any and all scales regardless of brand, he said.

According to ADC, sales and special product promotions can also be managed in the same fashion as regular pricing. Item prices can be lowered at pre-determined times for a sales promotion, and then raised automatically when the promotion is completed.
