Kellogg CEO Chosen for Commerce Post

WASHINGTON - Carlos Gutierrez, c.e.o. of the Kellogg Co., was tapped by President Bush to be Secretary of Commerce. If confirmed by the Senate, Gutierrez would succeed Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, a Texan and Bush confidant. President Bush announced Evans' resignation shortly after the Nov. 2 election.

The President said Gutierrez, 51, is "a visionary executive" and "one of America's most respected business leaders."

Gutierrez, whose family fled Cuba in 1960 when he was 6, joined Kellogg in 1975. Known for his strong work ethic and seemingly endless stream of ideas, Gutierrez worked all over the world for the company before being promoted to president and chief operating officer in June 1998.

Manly Molpus, Grocery Manufacturers of America president and c.e.o., extended congratulations to Gutierrez on behalf of the trade association. "We are confident that his knowledge and experience in both domestic and international business issues will be of great value to the U.S. Department of Commerce and to the country," said Molpus.

"As President Bush said, Carlos is 'one of America's most respected business leaders.' During his five-year tenure as a member of GMA's board of directors, Carlos has provided invaluable insight and leadership on critical issues for the food and beverage industry. We look forward to continuing our working relationship with him in the years to come."
