King Kullen Turns Restaurateur with Long Island Eatery

BETHPAGE, N.Y -- King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc., based here, has spawned a foodservice arm, The Kullenary, a full-service café/deli offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner to eat in or take out.

The establishment opened Nov. 28, near an industrial park in the Long Island town of Hauppague, to excellent business, according to its management. Thomas Massaro, Kullenary's president said his operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of King Kullen. "That means we benefit from King Kullen's 75 years of experience in the food business as well as their long-standing relationships with some of the nation's leading food suppliers."

Massaro said the café/deli offers "an extensive selection of luncheon meats, cheeses, store-made salads, fresh-made sandwiches, hot entrees, breads that are baked daily on premises, cakes and desserts, gourmet coffees, hot soups -- you name it, you can find it at the Kullenary. At 4,800 square feet, this is no ordinary deli."

One of the deli's features is a Boar's Head Signature Sandwich Station. The Kullenary also has an all-day hot bar, ready-to-go meals, freshly prepared quiches and potpies, sushi and salad stations, and multiple cash registers. The dining area offers free wireless Internet access.

"We're seeing people who stop in for breakfast or lunch, and then return after work to pick up dinner for the whole family," said Tony Femminella, Kullenary v.p.

The Kullenary also offers corporate and personal catering.

Kullenary spokesman Scott Merritt told PG that other locations are planned, but that the company was not ready to disclose further details.
