More Wal-Mart Supercenters Coming to Ohio

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Supermarket operators in Ohio, take heed: Six Wal-Mart Supercenters are coming to a neighborhood near you on May 17. The stores are located near Cincinnati (Forest Park and Fairfield Township), Springfield, Bowling Green, and Upper Sandusky. Three of the stores are new facilities, and three are expanded or relocated stores.

More than 6,500 people applied for the 1,480 jobs available at the six stores, Wal-Mart said yesterday in a statement. "I am not surprised by the large number of applicants we continue to receive at Wal-Mart," said Larry Greer, store manager at the new Forest Park Supercenter in the Cincinnati area, in a statement. "There are great career opportunities and good benefits with a growing company."

Wal-Mart is currently in the process of hiring for four additional stores it will open in the next few weeks in Bryan, Chardon (outside of Cleveland), Dayton, and St. Clairesville, Ohio.

Wal-Mart noted that it spent more than $12.5 billion last year in Ohio for services and merchandise. The retailer cited positive comments from several local vendors.

"We have been extremely pleased with our relationship with Wal-Mart," said Brian Reis, president of Ballreich Potato Chips, an 80-year-old family-owned business headquartered in Tiffin. "They treat us well as a supplier, and our business is growing rapidly." Ballreich products are carried in Wal-Mart stores throughout Ohio and in other states.

As of March 2006, Wal-Mart operated 75 Supercenters, 49 discount stores, 27 Sam's Clubs, and five distribution centers in Ohio.

Wal-Mart also said that its employee benefits, which are available to full- and part-time associates, include health care insurance with no lifetime maximum. The retailer said it offers a choice of as many as 18 health plans that cost as little as $11 a month in some areas. Wal-Mart also offers a 401(k) plan and profit-sharing contributions, whether an associate contributes or not; store discount cards; performance-based bonuses; a discounted stock purchase program; and life insurance.
