Pet Recalls Continue to Surface

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Mars Petcare US, Inc. earlier this week issued a voluntary recall of two brands of its pet food sold in specific states. The products are potentially contaminated with salmonella.

The supplier recalled select 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food sold in one store each in Reedsville and Richlandtown, Pa., and five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross-contamination, in people -- especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.

According to the supplier, the recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets, and pet owners who purchased it should dispose of the product in a safe manner, such as a securely covered trash receptacle, and return the empty bag to the store where the product was purchased, for a full refund.

Mars Petcare said it issued the recall because FDA detected salmonella in a sample of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food with a "best by" date of July 12, 2008.

The UPCs of these products have been blocked from retail sale at the locations where the potentially contaminated products were sold.

Pet owners who have questions about the voluntary recall should call (866) 298-8332, or visit the Mars Petcare's Web site for more information.
