Safeway Food Bank Donations Top $5.2 Million
DENVER - Company officials said on Monday that Safeway donated more than $5.2 million worth of food to the region's largest food bank during the fiscal year ended June 30, 2003, as part of the grocer's comprehensive program to assist hunger-relief agencies in Colorado and surrounding states.
Safeway, in partnership with its suppliers, contributed 3,279,554 pounds of food during fiscal 2003 to the Denver-based Food Bank of the Rockies, the region's largest food clearinghouse serving some 900 hunger-relief programs.
Valued at an average of $1.59 per pound by food bank officials, the tonnage represents a donation of $5,214,490 -- the largest food donation received by the Food Bank from a single company during the year.
"As a founding member of the Food Bank of the Rockies, we feel a special obligation to donate as much product as we can," said Safeway Denver Division President Paul McTavish. "The staff and volunteers do a tremendous job with critically important hunger relief programs, and we're honored to support them."
Later this month, Safeway will spearhead a special food drive in the Denver metro area to help the Food Bank of the Rockies gather non-perishable foods for students' school lunches, he added.
