Sedano’s Joins IMUSA USA in Speaking for Autism

Latino-themed Sedano’s Supermarkets and a fellow Florida company cookware manufacturer IMUSA USA have joined forces to generate awareness and raise funds for Autism Speaks. In all 34 Sedano’s Supermarkets from April 14 through May 15, shoppers will be encouraged to buy a $1 puzzle piece to support autism research. The interlocking multi-colored puzzle piece is the international symbol of autism.

“Autism affects one in every 110 children, [and is a condition] that touches so many children throughout South Florida. We invite the community to stop by our stores and donate $1 for Autism Speaks,” said Javier Herran, director of marketing at Miami, Fla.-based Sedano’s.

“Autism is all around us and affects our community and our customers,” added Manny Gaunaurd, president of Doral-based IMUSA USA. “Through our network of clients and friends, we help raise awareness, gather funds and advocate on behalf of Autism Speaks.”

The reasons to raise funds toward a cure for the mysterious condition are many. Autism spectrum disorders affect four times as many boys as girls, and the diagnosis has increased tenfold in the past decade. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown. As yet, there is no medical detection for the disorder. Perhaps most alarmingly, more children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined.

The first cookware company to support Autism Speaks, IMUSA USA has made significant monetary contributions to research, created a series of gluten-free recipes for autistic children and become an advocate, supporter, and sponsor of local fundraising activities.
